Essayist Biography

Steven Jenkins

Steven Jenkins is a San Francisco-based cultural critic and the Editor-in-Chief of Artweek. His writings on visual arts, literature, music and film have appeared in Out, New York, Detour, Publishers Weekly, the Bay Area Reporter and numerous artist monographs and exhibition catalogues. Jenkins has curated QAR exhibitions featuring Paul Cadmus, S. Brett Kaufman and John O'Reilly. He also moonlights as a partner in Blueprint, a book packaging and publishing company that fosters innovative mergings of images and text. Previously, he served as Senior Editor of see, a journal of visual culture published by The Friends of Photography. In retrospect, he realizes that his own youth–which consisted largely of watching The Mary Tyler Moore Show, listening to Elton John's Goodbye Yellow Brick Road and stealing glances at his older brother's paperback copy of Querelle–was quite queer, indeed. Jenkins can be reached via e-mail at sj27@earthlink.net.
