July 1965, photo by Galen McKinley

A few weeks after he met Harvey Milk in 1963, sixteen-year-old "Jack" McKinley moved from Tom O'Horgan's home to Harvey's Upper West Side apartment. McKinley began stage managing some of the experimental plays that O'Horgan was producing in his Lower East Side loft and at Ellen Stuart's fledgling Cafe La Mama. Harvey Milk moved to Greenwich Village and used his income as a Wall Street businessman to vicariously encourage his friends in their artistic pursuits.
