Thomas Blank

I am sure a lot of people have wondered,as I have, whether Bacon really saw people like that;I mean is it possible that Bacon was mentally ill? Anyone have any views on this?

: I am sure a lot of people have wondered,as I have, whether Bacon really saw people like that;I mean is it possible that Bacon was mentally ill? : Anyone have any views on this I think he was not ill , he felt so much and he had a romantic vision of reality.
    • Re: bacon's vision - Alex Alien 10:00:30 10/07/101 (3)
Bacon did not use his 'eyes' in the commonsense emprirical sense of 'seeing is believing' and Bacon did not hve a 'vision' and was not mentally ill. Bacon did not 'see' people as he painted them but smelt their scent as it were and fed-off their energies and sensations. Bacon's portraits are not distorted reality since reality is always already distorted; what you see in the mirror is a lie as the mirror does not reflect the face and its sensationism. Photographs are the real distrotion of … (more)
      • Re: bacon's vision - Rachel 15:37:28 9/07/102 (0)
I agree very much with you. I think what Bacon was painting was the essence of humans. We see ourselves, usually, as decent people, but Bacon was willing to create visual images of what he/we are really like. By removing himself so much from the physicality of what he was painting, he was able to get down to the actual ungraspable definition of a certain aspect of humankind.
      • Re: bacon's vision - JCG007 20:53:34 10/14/101 (1)
As you know there is alway some sort of debate on whether an Artist sees figures in that manner. Did Picasso see blue? rose, monkey women? The fact is that Bacon was, like those that came beform him, merely puting together those parts that pleased him most, his ideal. An interviewer asked him why he painted the "wrestlers" as he did and Bacon Replied "I like boys". So to say they hold some truth abouy reality would only be true if you (the viewer) were Bacon himself. Then this would be your … (more)
        • Re: bacon's vision - RAchel 15:39:56 9/07/102 (0)
Artist don't see blue or like Bacon's paintings. It's more like the way we think it should look (or shouldn't), or a way it would look better, or more true, or more real.
  • bacon's technique - Thomas Burns 08:47:51 9/10/101 (0)
although I have long been a fan of Bacon, both of his style of living life to the max and of his work I still have some reserves about his actual skill as a painter. It is clear that on close examination of his painting that he was a very clumsy artist and indeed his 'skill' as an artist lies as much in the way he overcame these technical limitations.I think that is still to early to call on whether he is a great or merely a good artist. By the way why don't we all arrange a Bacon night, say in … (more)

  • The Barry Joule Archive Fraud - Alex 'Alien' Russell 16:20:55 3/13/101 (0)
In London, the Barbican Art Centre is displaying the Barry Joule Archive of alleged Bacon sketches and scratched and painted photos. One only has to see how over-scratched, over-worked and over (carefully) damaged and torn these photos and sketches are to see that they are obvious crude fakes. In the early 1980's I went through Bacon's studio looking at his source material and none of these Joule Archive artefacts were there; moreover, why would Bacon hide them in his studio...and why did Bacon … (more)

Hello ! I am interested in the technique style used by F. Bacon. It is always said that he has learned painting only by himself. I have found one or two pictures of Bacon in his working room showing him in front of an unready painting. Does anyone know further material (like photos etc.). I think he was as well indluenced by Delacroix who was always interested to show not static figures but more figures in "action". I think, really important is, to go back from the whole painting to the form … (more)
  • No, Bacon wasn't related to the Grotesque at all... - Luis Mariano Akerman 10:28:48 1/31/101 (0)
Bacon's quotation of Oscar Wilde's words, in a 1971 interview (a month after his model and lover George Dyer had committed suicide), do introduce him as suggestive of the monstrous or, if you prefer, as a MASTER OF THE GROTESQUE: "you kill the thing you love."

**EARN BIG CASH FAST!!** I know you'll be a little skeptical, but reading this really can make you a lot of money! A little while back, I was browsing through newsgroups, just like you are now, and came across an article similar to this that said you could make thousands of dollars within weeks with only an initial investment of $6.00! So I thought, to myself "Yeah right, this must be a scam", but like most of us, I was curious, so I kept reading. Anyways, it said that you send $1.00 to each of … (more)

Bacon's use of deformation is not as simple as some people often think. It was the artist--not me--who insisted on the use of distortion as a means of getting closer to reality. Thus distortion is not ust in my mind, but in his paintings. Today we do know that Bacon was utterly fascinated with the grotesque. In the early 1970s, for example, the artist expressed that elephants alive are beautiful, but decomposing ones are much more beautiful, as there is a kind of magic in their state of … (more)

  • The Grotesque and Bacon's Imagery - Luis Mariano Akerman 10:44:52 11/13/100 (1)
Many people think of Bacon's imagery in terms of either the repulsive or the attractive. But the artist's visual world includes both aspects. To think that Bacon's contribution has to do with using distortion as an end in itself implies not understanding his work at all. For he used deformation as an appropriate means of self-expression. Indeed, he was original in dealing with his preoccupations and succeeded in expressing them visually. Thus, it is not surprising that in his instinctive … (more)

You must be making a mistake. Francis Bacon does not use DEFORMATION......what ever that may be! in his paintings. I suggest that the DEFORMATION that you allude to exists solely in your mind. Francis Bacon simply painted reality. Crude and distorted as it may seem. You might find a substitute lacking in availabilty.

Bacon's triptychs were important as they tell stories of his life Though he never knew quite what he was painting as he painted off his nervous system. he has famous quotes like "i think my paintings just come about.i couldn't say where any of the elements come from" this is underlinig the fact he isn't aware of what he is painting he just lets his mind do the work he unlocks the valves of feeling he unlocks deep feelings inside himself and others who view his work. take three studies for … (more)

To: Daniel D. Tennant I replied to your quest but your e-mail address was returned an invalid URL. Regarding your question concerning Bacon's alleged 'distorted' , 'disfigured'and 'deformed' portraits; they are nothing of the kind; it is photographic and 'realist' (literal) representation that is the 'true' distortion. We are so conditioned by photographic realism as being 'true' to 'life' that Bacon's image thus appears 'distorted'. We need to rethink appearances (which can be deceptive). … (more)

Bacon bit: I was in the town of Ferrara, Italy when I went into the local liquor store. The owner had an enormous oil by Bacon mounted on a chair. He told me his wife thought it was ugly and he was forced to keep it there. He said he had bought it as an investment. I was pretty astonished at the sight. Only later did I realize it was a perfect place for FB: right in front of the racks of booze.

As a 6th-form art student, I have to write an essay on distortion in portraits. Under the chapter of Francis Bacon, I have stumbled into a dead end. In all the reports, books, articles and what-nots about Bacon I have read, I still cannot find any reason WHY his portraits are so disfigured, disformed and distorted. Can anyone kindly be of help, as to pointing me in the right direction with use of web pages, books, etc. To be of even more help, could anyone possibly simply give me any useful … (more)

Long time admirer of his work. Saw Love is the Devil last night with my brother, whose own art has long been influenced by Francis Bacon. An incredible film. Enjoyed the article. I'll be back.

It occurred to me as I was eating my daily ration of oatmeal that I hadn't visited you lately so I clicked you up. There was Francis Bacon, whom I've been intending to learn a lot more about for a few months. I'm one of your site's biggest fans and with Bacon you've outdone yourselves. The writing is acerbic, which I adore--maybe could be moreso--but seems to be dead on. I'm afraid the more I learn of Bacon the less I respect his work, but he is always enormously interesting. Thanks for publishing this intelligent and enjoyable retrospective of Bacon on your site. I particularly enjoyed the allusion to Thatcher's derision of Bacon and her fondness for "ceramic ornamental figures". Yes, indeed, Thatcher was a true philistine in every sense of the word. (Links)

I continue to enjoy my visits your Bacon exhibit and reading the article by Mr. Cooper. I also wanted to let you know that my site, Tribute to Francis Bacon, has moved to a new server at: http://members.xoom.com/scatt/bacon_page.html (Links)
