Bacon did not use his 'eyes' in the commonsense emprirical sense of 'seeing is believing' and Bacon did not hve a 'vision' and was not mentally ill. Bacon did not 'see' people as he painted them but smelt their scent as it were and fed-off their energies and sensations. Bacon's portraits are not distorted reality since reality is always already distorted; what you see in the mirror is a lie as the mirror does not reflect the face and its sensationism. Photographs are the real distrotion of reality not Bacon's paintings. Bacon challenges all your commonsense assumptions about appearance and vision.
Bacon's portraits 'are as we are' but we don't like to see it or rather cannot see it.
