David Deitcher pointed out at a panel about the Wojnarowicz exhibition at Fales Library that the New Museum exhibition made David a distant presence in his own work and I agree. I enjoyed seeing his work again after all this time but the spirit is missing. He is there for me in the journals and ephemera of the archive at Fales and the newly published "Journals". As Dan Cameron, the curator of the New Museum Exhibit said in an interview David's work was what art would look like in the future and I think that is very true.
The Fales Library exhibition at New York University: _Reality and Realism: The Vision of David Wojnarowicz_, draws on the extensive David Wojnarowicz Papers held in the Library. Included are journals, letters, photographs, art objects, and other materials that document the development of Wojnarowiczís career and his aesthetics. The Wojnarowicz Papers are a part of the Downtown Collection, a collection of materials that documents the Soho and East Village literary and arts scene from 1975 to the present. The exhibition will be open until April 23, 1999.
